Storyline:
It was no ordinary life for a young girl: living among scholars in the hallowed halls of Jordan College and tearing unsupervised through Oxford's motley streets on mad quests for adventure. But Lyra's greatest adventure would begin closer to home, the day she heard hushed talk of an extraordinary particle. Microscopic in size, the magical dust- discovered in the vast Arctic expanse of the North -was rumored to possess profound properties that could unite whole universes. But there were those who feared the particle and would stop at nothing to destroy it. Catapulted into the heart of a terrible struggle, Lyra was forced to seek aid from clans, 'gyptians, and formidable armored bears. And as she journeyed into unbelievable danger, she had not the faintest clue that she alone was destined to win, or to lose, this more-than-mortal battle...

People need to read a book before criticizing it. Pullman asks his readers to THINK about issues. Why are some people so scared of allowing their children to think for themselves? Pullman DOES NOT KILL GOD. This is a such a typical reaction of religious zealots who cannot bear the thought that some of their views maybe intolerable to others. It was the same with Harry Potter. Please take your whole family to see this film. America needs to wake up and start thinking again. Why not let your kids make up thier own minds.?

This movie skips over and condenses so much that you lose most of the magic and sense of adventure the book has. Lyra isn't shown to be as resourceful and courageous as she is in the book. She just seems lucky more than anything else. We don't get a good feeling as to why people like her and want to help protect her. The prophesy seems more like an add-on than the reason for what happens. Mrs. Coulter is played more as a mean, bad person than as someone to really fear. The fight scenes are short and don't add much to the story (they do add to the story in the book). We see Lyra using the compass without getting a real sense of how she learned to use it. And we don't get to see how important it really is. I read the Lord of the Rings books and even though they changed many things in it for the movies, they still kept the spirit of the story. The movie for The Golden Compass has virtually none of the spirit the book has. The movie was just plain dull

inspirations

Let me start off by saying that I am a Christian, devoted. Now, I read the His Dark Materials series when I was in the seventh grade and I loved it. My parents didn't stop me, and there was no reason that they should have. If any of you have researched the accusations agains Philip Pullman, in depth, you'd realize that he is not trying to "kill God". He is not a Christian and does not believe, but he didn't set out to kill God. Let me say that if you are afraid of Christians seeing this movie, then you do not have much faith. Just because I am going to see this movie, does not mean that I am going to suddenly decide that God does not exist. It's like a fairy-tale, it's impossible. IT'S A STORY. As long as you understand that, you'll be fine.

The movie looks promising with the CGIed daemons, and if its up to par with the book. As a practicing Christian and someone who has read these, I don?t see what the problem is with this movie. You shouldn?t go right into ?MUST PROTECT WOMEN AND CHILDREN? mode you should take it as an opportunity to teach. Maybe teach your children to see past that (and you should do fine with this movie since the religious, or lack there of, aspects of the movie are 9/10 going to be removed to please people like you) and see maybe good versus evil and maybe view TGC as did. The authority was a lot like the devil. Saying he?s better than anyone else, if anything have him represent a false deity, and remember that their simply can?t be a good side of the story without God. Can?t wait until December the seventh, and I have a clear conscience about enjoying myself. P.S Remember. It's a movie, if a movies about killing people made people kill people we'd all be dead by now.

I have said it about the Harry Potter movies, and I will say it about this again: Why do those who make movies from spectacularly written fantasy books feel the need to differ from the successful source material? The books are hugely popular, what makes a director think that can improve upon that? While the movie is visually stunning, it jumps from place to place with a quickness that is jarring and events are illogically rearranged. Have directors not learned yet that we are willing to stay for a movie longer than two hours if it is in fact a GOOD MOVIE? As soon as a plot thread is introduced it is immediately solved to move on to the next change of scenery. In the introduction it explains Dust and the Golden Compass before action even starts, thus taking out any mystery surrounding them. And yet still they fail to show how miraculous it is that Lyra can read the compass or why people find it so important to help her. All action, no explanation, typical Hollywood.
